Covid Warning: This advice is based on all of us being protected
from a deadly virus. Please be safe and wait until it is safe to
socialize.
How
to Begin?
If you decide to go, ask your date, or accept an
invitation early. This gives you time to coordinate your attire. Additionally, if your date is from another
school, inform him/her of the proper attire.
May
I go to the Prom alone?
There is nothing wrong in attending solo or with a
group of friends. In fact, this might be
preferable as there is less stress; you don't have to try to please
anyone. If attending with friends,
include them in the transportation and dinner planning.
How
will you get there?
Hiring a limousine is a popular option but can be
awfully expensive. Call around for
rates, as these vary greatly. Include
parents in the decision but remember this is your financial
responsibility. Earn money to pay for it
and split the fee with friends. Also,
remember to tip the driver. This is not
cheap! Generally, tips are 20% of the
fee.
However, a limo is not the only mode of
transportation. If a parent has a special or unique vehicle, perhaps this
person can play chauffeur for the evening.
A taxi may be an option if shared, but a tip is expected. Then again,
there is nothing wrong in driving yourself in a regular-everyday vehicle. If you drive, stay sober! Still, you're too young to drink anyway. So, eliminate alcohol from your list of
must-haves for the evening.
What to Wear?
Most often proms are formal affairs, which dictate
long gowns and tuxedos. However, semi-formal may also be an option. In this case, short dresses and dinner
jackets or sport coats and ties would be most appropriate. Gentlemen, if you choose to wear a tuxedo,
avoid the temptation to exercise your uniqueness. You'll find many colors to choose from, but
basic black is the best choice. It is
classy, suave, and not likely to embarrass your date. If you want to blend with the color of her
dress, do so with a vest, corsage, or tie--not the entire tuxedo.
Ladies, it may be best to wear a wrap or shawl if
yours is a strapless dress. Wear your
gloves over rings and bracelets and
remove them during dinner. Additionally,
to
save money, check out your local thrift, consignment stores, and online
recourses for used dresses.
Don't Forget
the Flowers!
Generally,
the young man purchases a flower – corsage, nosegay, or wristlet – to match the
color of his date's dress. In turn, she
will give him a boutonniere or flower
for his lapel. Commonly, this is a rose
or carnation.
Selecting
flowers in season will save you money.
Alternatively, a crafty person can create these.
Where
will you Dine?
Often, part of the prom night experience is dining
together. If dinner is not provided at
the prom venue, you may want to take your date to a restaurant. Prom night may be a busy night for the
restaurants in your area, so make your reservations early. Request a quiet table away from the kitchen,
front door, and restrooms. However, to
save money, one of you can host dinner at your home. If dinner isn't part of your plans, simply
begin your date after dinner.
